48th SEANET 2024: A Triumph!

The 48th South East Asia Amateur Radio Network (SEANET) Conference concluded marking yet another milestone in the long-standing tradition of bringing together amateur radio enthusiasts from across the globe. The event, held from 3rd to 6th October in Negombo, Sri Lanka, saw the participation of both seasoned operators and eager newcomers, coming together after a brief hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s conference wasn’t just a formal event—it was a lively, engaging, and rich experience where amateur radio operators, both old-timers and new hams, shared knowledge, stories, and built lasting friendships. Once seen as a convention for senior operators, SEANET has now grown to bridge generations, ensuring that the spirit of amateur radio continues to thrive. The conference was filled with insightful presentations, thought-provoking discussions, and interactive sessions that inspired the entire delegation.

One of the highlights was the 4S7SEA Radio Station, which operated  throughout the conference. Delegates enjoyed live on-air sessions, exploring different frequencies and making international contacts.

Memorable Moments & Participant Reflections

Delegates didn’t just attend sessions—they fully immersed themselves in the experience, from roundtable discussions to evening bonfires and casual chit-chats over drinks. “I truly enjoyed wonderful interactions with all of you. Thanks once again for providing me this opportunity to gain valuable experience,” said Aruna, a first-time attendee who is now inspired to obtain his amateur radio license.

Ramesh VU2LU, President of the Amateur Radio Society of India (ARSI), shared his thoughts, stating, “It was a wonderful event, and I have enjoyed every moment of this great convention.”

Here are some of the key takeaways from SEANET 2024:

  • Special Stamps & First Day Cover: Two unique stamps with group photos of the participants and a first-day cover were issued for the event. Delegates were astonished at how the organizers managed to have an official stamp released in just a matter of hours.
  • Heartfelt Appreciation: Dr. Singh 9M2KN, Chair of SEANET 2024, Victor 4S7VK, Secretary of the RSSL, and Tharanga 4S6TMP, President of the RSSL and head of the local organizing committee, were honored with traditional Indian shawls for their contributions.
  • Next Host Announced: Ramesh VU2LU graciously accepted to host SEANET 2025 in Bangalore, India, on behalf of the Indian amateur radio community.
  • A True Celebration of Amateur Radio: Michael BD4AAQ remarked, “Small and fun. We enjoyed this very much,” while Hu Songqing BA4HU added, “The preparations and arrangements were excellent—the presentations, the radio station, the stamps… everything at lightning speed.”

Challenges & Triumphs

Organizing SEANET 2024 wasn’t without its hurdles. Initially planned for September, the event had to be postponed due to Sri Lanka’s Presidential elections. This resulted in numerous delegate cancellations, logistical challenges, and the need to scale down certain aspects of the conference. However, through the tireless efforts of the Radio Society of Sri Lanka (RSSL) team, the event came to life with enthusiasm and passion.

As Tharanga 4S6TMP President of the RSSL, expressed, “We faced numerous challenges, but the commitment of our team made this a reality. Reviving SEANET after a long break was no easy task, but we took the first step, and now others will follow. We look forward to seeing even bigger participation next year in Bangalore.”

A Farewell & A Thank You

Following the formal sessions, participants were treated to sightseeing tours around Sri Lanka, visiting Colombo, Kandy, and the scenic southern coast. Delegates had the chance to experience the rich culture and natural beauty of the island, making the event truly memorable.

The SEANET Committee extends its gratitude to the dynamic Sri Lankan team and the hospitality partner, Amagi Aria Hotel, Negombo, for their outstanding service and support throughout the event. Special thanks go to Dr. Singh 9M2KN, Ramesh VU2LU, and the entire team from Sri Lanka for their invaluable contributions.

SEANET 2024 not only brought us closer as amateur radio operators but also demonstrated the importance of staying connected as a global community. We look forward to continuing this journey in Bangalore in 2025!

Let’s keep the spirit of amateur radio alive and thriving. See you next year!
